Do nothing at the expense of another. This is quite challenging for the human being who is ruled by the ego. The ego sees only separation. He or she thinks of the self only and takes actions that are self-centered. “Every man for himself” is the motto that points directly to ego. There is little soul growth in such an attitude, for the spiritual path is all about the journey from ego to oneness. Oneness sees all as part of a whole, made up of countless souls. These souls are not separate, but comprised of the same indivisible Source-energy. “Every man for himself” becomes “Every soul for the whole” and then taking an action that would cause harm, discomfort, or even inconvenience becomes unthinkable.

A great sorrow in my life stems from a situation in which i decided that i was entitled to happiness…. even when my happiness would surely create certain discomfort for others. Kicker is, what i thought would be a simple discomfort for them turned into a hate and loathing toward me. I had not and did not realized the depth that their discomfort would reach until i suffered 10 agonizing years of earthly separation from them. This had certainly not been my intention but there it was anyway. So much for thinking “they would just have to (and could) bear it”, and that once over the discomfort, they would learn to “be happy for me.”
